Located in the Caribbean Sea, The Cayman Islands are about 100 miles to the south of Cuba. Tourism is the strongpoint of the economy as the diving here is unmatched and because of the many resorts. Grand Cayman is the main island and the largest. The Sister Islands are Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Colonized by the British, The Cayman Islands are now independent.
Georgetown, on Grand Cayman, is the capital of the islands. The port here is a fashionable stopping point for cruise ships. Tourists leave the boats for a day to shop, eat and dive. 7 Mile Beach is on Grand Cayman and is one of the world’s most famous and prettiest beaches. Dive resorts and holiday resorts are located on this stretch of beach. On the north side of the island you will find the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park, a lush get away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts.
Boatswain’s Beach is a Grand Cayman must-see. The Cayman Turtle Farm is here which houses over 14,000 different turtles. Stingray City is the Cayman’s most popular attraction. Moby Dick Tours will take you by boat to Stingray Sandbar where you will be able to snorkel with stingrays, feed them, and pet them.
Shopping is all the rage when in the Caymans. George Town and 7 Mile Beach are the trendy spots to browse for caymanite, a local semi-precious gem, and black coral jewelry. Tortuga Rum Company’s rum cakes are wonderful reminders of your trip and nice gifts if you can get them home before devouring them.
Hell is in the Cayman Islands! On the West Bay, Hell is covered with black volcanic rock. It is said this is what “hell” looks like, hence the name. Lots of “Hell” themed souvenirs are available in local shops.
Local fish and seafood are the native foods of the islands. Fresh fish, turtle, and conch are available in most restaurants and are prepared a variety of ways. Dining is casual to five- star so you will be sure to find something to fit your needs.
The major airport is Owen Roberts International Airport. Located outside George Town on Grand Cayman, it is a sixty minute hop from Miami. British Airways and Cayman airways offer daily flights from England and North America.
